Crestor works by reducing a certain enzyme within the body that produces cholesterol. It belongs to a class of medications called statins.

Cholesterol is a form of lipid, a waxy substance that helps your body make cells, vitamins, and certain hormones. It is not inherently bad. Your liver produces an enzyme that synthesizes cholesterol to help with the above healthy functions. Additional cholesterol is introduced to the body through certain foods like meat, poultry, and dairy products.

There are two types of cholesterol: high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs). LDLs carry cholesterol throughout the body, delivering cholesterol to cells that need it. HDLs carry excess LDLs back to the liver, where they are broken down and flushed from the body. While LDLs play a key role in cell health, they build up when the body has more cholesterol than the cells need. This buildup turns into plaque in the arteries (blood vessels). As plaque covers the artery walls, the blood vessels become narrow. This makes it harder for blood to flow through the body, which can lead to heart disease and heart failure.

Statins work by reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver, which lowers the overall cholesterol levels in the body. Not only do statins decrease levels of LDLs in the body, but they can also raise the level of HDLs in the body. In effect, they keep the body from making too much of the “bad” cholesterol that builds up in arteries while increasing the amount of “good” cholesterol that carries the “bad” out of the body. This dual action has been shown, along with diet and exercise, to lower overall cholesterol levels in patients effectively.

Crestor (rosuvastatin) can lower levels of LDLs. While not as effective as low-dosage medication, it can reduce cholesterol levels in patients. Lower doses of rosuvastatin may be more effective than a lower dose. Lower doses of rosuvastatin are not recommended for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia or dyslipoproteinemia (high levels of cholesterol in the body).

A: Rosuvastatin is an oral medication that works by blocking an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. This increase in cholesterol results in acaemia (a early start to feel like “high”). When taken with a high-fat diet, Rosuvastatin can reduce cholesterol levels in patients by 60%. However, it does not appear to be as effective as a low-fat diet when taken with a low-fat diet. A medication taken twice daily provides more benefit when taken once a day.

Dosage: Rosuvastatin is available in oral capsules and tablet. The dosage of rosuvastatin varies depending on the indication for the medication. A rosuvastatin dose of 4000 mg is typically fine. A rosuvastatin dose of 8000 mg should be taken twice daily, preferably before meals. Rosuvastatin is also available in a tablet form. The tablet form of rosuvastatin is different, so it is important to consult your healthcare provider before purchasing any form of rosuvastatin.

FDA Warns

Rosuvastatin is an oral medication that should not be taken by patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, liver disease, or those who are taking medications that lower LDL levels.

The safety and effectiveness of rosuvastatin in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, liver disease, or those who are taking medications that lower LDL levels have not been established.

However, several risks have been reported with rosuvastatin use, including a low birth weight, gestational diabetes, use of other medications to treat high blood pressure, certain cancers, and certain sleep disorders.

Rosuvastatin is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to rosuvastatin or any ingredient in rosuvastatin capsule or tablet. Rosuvastatin should not be taken by patients with a known hypersensitivity to rosuvastatin or any ingredient in rosuvastatin capsule or tablet.

Drug Interactions

Rosuvastatin is a CYP3A4 inhibitor, which means it blocks the absorption of a drug. This means it can reduce the amount of rosuvastatin that your body makes. One study found that rosuvastatin increased the level of rosuvastatin metabolized by the liver, which could potentially cause liver problems.
